Cabinet Painting FAQ

Answers to the questions Philadelphia homeowners ask most about painting and refacing kitchen cabinets.

Painting method & timeline

Do you spray cabinets or brush and roll them?

We spray. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in our shop, and frames are sprayed on-site under full plastic masking. Spraying gives a smooth, factory-like finish with no brush or roller marks.

How long does a cabinet painting project take?

Most kitchens take about 5 business days. We're in your home on only 2–3 of those days, and you can use the kitchen most evenings. Large kitchens, two-tone colors, or painted interiors can add a day or two.

Do you remove the doors and drawers?

Yes. Every door and drawer front is labeled, removed, and taken to our spray shop, and the hinges and hardware are bagged and kept safe. Everything goes back in its original place.

Can I use my kitchen during the project?

Mostly, yes. On the 1–2 days we're working on the frames, the counters, sink, and stove are covered during work hours. We uncover the sink and main counters at the end of each day.

Prep, products & durability

What prep work do you do before painting?

We degrease every surface with a cabinet cleaner, scuff sand, fill dents and scratches, caulk open seams, and apply a bonding primer. Good prep is what keeps paint from peeling.

What paint do you use?

We use cabinet-grade urethane enamels such as Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane and Benjamin Moore ADVANCE, over a bonding or shellac primer chosen for your cabinet material.

Will painted cabinets chip or peel?

When they're prepped and sprayed correctly, painted cabinets hold up for many years. The enamel cures hard in about 2–3 weeks. After that, wipe with mild soap and water and avoid harsh cleaners. Every project includes a workmanship warranty.

Does the paint smell?

We use low-odor, low-VOC waterborne coatings, so most of the spraying happens in our shop. Any smell in your home is mild and fades within a day.

Cabinet types

Can you paint oak cabinets? Will the grain show?

Yes. Oak has open grain that shows through paint as texture. Some people like that look. If you want a perfectly smooth modern finish, we offer grain filling as an add-on.

Can you paint thermofoil cabinets?

Sometimes. If the thermofoil is firmly bonded, we can prime and paint it. If it's peeling or bubbling, we remove it and refinish the MDF underneath, or we recommend refacing with new doors.

Can you paint MDF or laminate cabinets?

Yes. MDF paints very well once the edges are sealed. Laminate needs sanding and a special bonding primer. We check both for swelling or loose edges first.

Do you paint bathroom vanities and built-ins?

Yes, including vanities, laundry cabinets, wet bars, mudroom lockers, and built-in bookcases. They're easy to add to a kitchen project.

Options & add-ons

Do you paint the inside of cabinets?

Interiors aren't included by default because most are already finished, but we can paint them for an extra charge. Interiors of glass-front cabinets are always included.

Can you do two-tone cabinets?

Yes, and they're very popular, for example white uppers with navy lowers or a contrasting island. Two-tone costs a bit more because of extra masking and cleanup between colors.

Can you install new handles, knobs, and hinges?

Yes. We fill the old holes, drill new ones with a template so everything lines up, and can install soft-close hinges. You can supply the hardware or we can recommend some.

What is cabinet refacing and how is it different from painting?

Refacing replaces your doors and drawer fronts with new ones (often Shaker style) and refinishes the cabinet boxes to match. Choose painting if you like your door style, and refacing if you want a new door style. More about refacing.

Pricing & estimates

How much does cabinet painting cost?

Most Philadelphia-area kitchens cost $3,500–$8,500 to paint, or about $125–$200 per door or drawer front with frames included. See our cabinet painting cost guide.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Estimates are always free and written, either from photos or from an in-home visit.

Can I get a quote by sending photos?

Yes, and it's the fastest way. Text 3–4 photos to (551) 233-6165: one wide shot of the kitchen, one close-up of a door, and one of the island if you have one. We usually reply the same day.

Do you require a deposit?

We take a deposit to reserve your start date and order materials. The balance is due when the job is complete and you're happy with the walkthrough.
